OUR LOKAHI CLASSROOM
LESSON PLANS
Week of November 7-10, 2022
October was busy in Lokahi and we have finally recovered from the Halloween craziness!
In Language Arts, the girls finished their HAUNTED HOUSE FOR SALE advertisements. They had so much fun and wrote some great ad copy. Plus they really understood writing in the second person, which is often tricky to get. Many of them also typed their first essays and they were very excited about this. You can see all their work on the bulletin board by the end of this week.
Currently, we are getting ready to start the first big writing assignment. They will be researching and writing an essay that ties into our current science unit about space. This week we will learn/review research methods, go over the editing process and discuss what a rubric is and really understand the assignment expectations. These essays will be completed before Thanksgiving Break, so be sure to ask your student about their topic and writing project.
In Math, Group A is busy learning the theories behind multiplication, creating arrays and starting to memorize their first fast facts! They are making quick progress and will be working on a multiplication chart for 0-5.
Group B is busy learning different ways to attack multi-digit multiplication. They are also refreshing their reasoning skills for word problems.
Group C is applying the concept of PEMDAS to multi-step equations. After a quick refresher on multi-digit multiplication, they will begin a Math Project and design a resort!
In Social Studies this week, we are of course talking about elections! We reviewed the levels of government, and also the election process. Today they created Huakailani Voter Registration Cards and got themselves and the Malama students registered for our all-school mock election on Tuesday. Their votes will be registered through the Hawaii KidsVote program so they can follow along with other Hawaii students.
In science class this week, we will continue our unit on space studies and brainstorm ideas for our research essay. We are learning about length of day, shadows, and time zones, so it was very exciting to see
Mr. Wallace walking our dog live on the webcam at the the beach near our house on Martha's Vineyard. It was some real coast to coast learning!
